Jane Hardstaff – Handbound Books

Jane makes a range of handmade books using traditional bookbinding techniques.   These include single and multi-section notebooks with pages sewn together and cased in a hardback binding of book cloth and co-ordinating papers.  A variety of stitching methods produce different results, with coptic stitched journals which have an open spine and showcase the stitching, and stab-bound albums using traditional Japanese sewing techniques to form a decorative finish.  Larger photo albums are constructed in the traditional way with compensation guards so that pages can be used for photos or scrap-booking without causing the album to bulge.

The wide variety of papers used ensures there is something to catch everyone’s eye, from traditional prints and pretty florals to more modern fun and quirky designs.   Jane is always adding to her standard range with seasonal items.

Jane is keen to make use of recycled and reused materials.  Books in her recycled range are made from handmade book board created by laminating together layers of waste cardboard into sturdy board.  Many of her designs use a patchwork of papers to ensure even the smallest pieces are used up.

A range of handmade cards and bookmarks are also available in the Gallery.
