Guest: Penelope O’Gara

Since moving to the Somerset Levels Penelope has been increasingly drawn to the spirit of the
place. Burrowing into the treasure trove of English folklore and local fauna, she has found herself
creating liminal beings that cross the divide between animal and human, mythic and
mortal, as well as representations of the small creatures that scurry unseen between us.
Every piece is hand-stitched from recycled cotton and linen cloth, embroidered and
adorned with scraps of silk, lace and ribbons before a dip in botanical dye and final details
being added with pastels and graphite. Using vintage textiles and found objects for their
costume is both an ethical choice and an excuse to revel in the textures of antique lace, old
velvets and battered satins.
